October 12, 2023, 1pm Thursday, Zoom Presentation/ Teresa Baker Teresa was awarded the Joan Mitchell in 2022 Fellowship and is located in Los Angeles . Honoring both her modern aesthetic and the materials and cultural metaphors of her childhood, Baker transforms synthetic materials into works that reference territories’ irregular shapes. The looping marks, made with materials like yarn and string, suggest mapping. These works are drawn from memories in the grand Northern Plains where she is from and time spent exploring, walking, looking, and working. The materials, texture, shapes, and color relationships are guided by the Artists’ Mandan/Hidatsa culture to explore how identity can relate to innate objects.
“I am interested in bringing landscape, specifically that of the Northern Plains, into an object through abstraction. Combining artificial materials together with traditional materials that my tribes—the Mandan and Hidatsa—used for utilitarian, storytelling, ceremonial, and decorative means, I reimagine how these plant and animal materials function in the context of a new object—one that seeks to explore the importance of place, land, and how we interact with it.”
