ARTaBET

Date: April 6-27, 2013

Location: Panza Gallery | 115 Sedgwick Street, Millvale PA 15209

Picture a medieval manuscript page, with the first letter beautifully decorated or “illuminated.” That’s the theme of our FI2013 fundraiser, but with a 21st century flavor.
We need at least 26 artists to create one letter of the alphabet in a 12” x 12” finished block in the medium of your choice. Once we have 26 artists, we’ll either repeat some letters or include numbers. After all the letters have been created and photographed, they’ll be arranged digitally and printed on a large sheet of paper suitable for gift wrapping. Multiple sheets will be sold in a roll.

The details:

  • Original art must be 12”x12”. Work can be matted and framed if desired (no glass or plexi) for exhibition, but please photograph it first. Work can be two-dimensional or bas-relief, but not freestanding sculpture. It must be installation-ready to hang on a wall, and must be identified on the back with your name and title of the work.
  • Artwork must be approved by January 9, 2013 and completed by the January 24 Potluck. You may bring your work (in progress or completed) to any of the critiques listed below, or send or email a photo to either address below.
  • Artists are encouraged (but not required) to bring their completed artwork to the January 24 Potluck, which will feature an Artabet Show & Talk: artists will briefly discuss their letter artwork
  • Please provide a high quality digital image of your completed letter by January 31, 2013. If you’re not able to do this, Martha Wasik can photograph your artwork at the January 24 Potluck.
  •  Please write a short statement about your letter artwork by January 31, which will be included with the wrapping paper and the exhibition. Any discussion of letter choice, inspiration, interpretation, materials choice, etc. can be included. Avoid biographical information
  • An exhibition of the original Artabet artwork will run concurrently with the beginning of Fi2013 at the Panza Gallery. The gallery retains 50% commission on sales. Since this is a fundraiser, artists are asked (but not required) to donate a portion of their 50% to Fiberart International. Unsold artwork will remain the property of the artist.
  • The wrapping paper will be for sale at the Artabet exhibition opening, at the Fi2013 opening and Forum, online, and at other local shops. All proceeds benefit Fiberart International.

At that event, artists will be asked (but not required) to donate a portion of the sale to Fiberart International.

ARTaBET is now closed, we’ve filled two entire alphabets!
