Beaded & Stitched Mandala Workshop with Julie Booth (Zoom)

Workshop limited to 20 participants. Registration deadline: October 25, 2026

Participants will create a small “meditative” mandala from beads, sequins, ribbons, cheesecloth
and tulle. Julie will show students how to build a layered collage, apply beads and sequins,
attach a shell or sea glass with a thread net, ruch ribbons and couch yarns. She will also
demonstrate how to add a backing and stitched edging to the finished piece. Julie enjoys giving
these beautiful beaded and stitched mandalas as gifts for healing or protection.

$45 workshop fee includes a required kit containing the following materials:

• (1) 5” square cotton fabric
• (1) 5” square wool blend felt for a stabilizer
• (1) 7” square cotton backing fabric
• Tulle to cover your fabric base
• Small assortment of painted cheesecloth scraps
• (1) shell or piece of sea glass
• Assortment of size 6 and 8 seed beads and sequins
• Small assortment of larger focal or unusual beads
• Small assortment of ribbon and yarn
• (2) balls of pearl cotton thread (size 8) to complement your kit colors
• Needle pack (includes (2) crewel embroidery (#3, #5), (1) sharp (#5), (2) chenille (# 24, #22)

Julie will be creating kits in an assortment of colors. When ordering your kit, please provide two
color options that you’d be willing to work with.

Students should bring the following items to class:

• Fabric scissors
• Embroidery (small, sharp) scissors
• Pins (glass head ones are fine)
• Bottle cap: 2.5”-3” diameter. You’ll trace this to create your mandala circle.
• Permanent marker (fine point) for tracing around the bottle cap.
• Optional: 6”-12” Ruler (I prefer a clear gridded one, but any type will do)
• Optional: Threads in additional colors (I suggest pearl cotton in sizes 8 or 12)
• Optional: Task light

About Julie B. Booth

I’m an artist, an author but most of all, I’m a teacher who loves to inspire my students to stretch. My greatest joy is watching students get excited, jump in fully and produce works that speak to them and others.

I personally enjoy hours in the studio playing with fabric and threads, experimenting with basic hand stitches and observing the “secrets” they reveal through play.

In 2013-2014, I wrote Fabric Printing at Home (Quarry Books 2014), a book that focuses on using household materials to create print blocks, stencils, and fabric resists.

I’ve been a featured artist in three Quilting Arts TV series and have written several articles for Quilting Arts magazine on hand stitching and surface design projects.

In 2020, I moved my teaching online. I teach workshops and classes in hand stitching as an expressive art medium as well as how to create beautiful, hand stitched art objects.

I’ve had and continue to have the pleasure of teaching experimental hand stitching projects and techniques for organizations, guilds and conferences including TextileArtist.org’s Stitch Club (2020, 2022, and 2027); Quilt and Surface Design Symposium (2024); Artistic Artifacts’ Creative Minds Summit (2025 and 2026); Art Quilt Midwest (2025).
