She looks forward to sharing her work and to inspire those who may not think of themselves as artists to let go and create! \n\n\n\n\nRebecca’s website\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThere will have light refreshments in the classroom next door. Contact Michelle Browne mlbatoast7@gmail.com for car pool or driving directions. \n\n\n\nNOTE ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY Be aware that there is no elevator at Radiant Hall. SUMMARY:UK Artist Jennifer Collier - The Art of Paper and Stitch: Experimental Techniques Dresses Workshop Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Techniques Dresses – A Two-Day Zoom WorkshopPart 1: Sunday\, Feb 25Part 2: Sunday\, March 17 \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP IS FULL \n\n\n\nContact Michelle Browne mlbatoast7@gmail.com to get on the wait list. \n\n\n\nTo start\, the students will learn 5 ‘experimental’ techniques including melting plastics\, fusing objects in plastic\, waxing papers\, wax entrapment in teabags\, and transferring magazine images using “selotape”. Once they “have had a go at” these techniques they will make a two -part dress (bodice and skirt) using their favourite combination of techniques. The dresses will be hand stitched together and embellished with pockets\, collars\, buttons and handmade paper roses.  Jennifer will demonstrate paper pleating\, covered binding\, button loops\, pockets\, collars and patchworking papers to create the ‘fabric’ for your dress. She will then go onto show how to put these together and construct the garment. \n\n\n\nFrom Jennifer: “I am on the screen the whole time (except for the break) and do demonstrations at set times\, so people can choose to work away from the screen\, but come back to these times to watch the next bit.” \n\n\n\n*Each student will need a copy of the template I will email and share with participants in advance for this workshop. Students will also need access to old/dirty irons for waxing papers. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jennifer \n\n\n\nPaper pioneer and UK artist Jennifer Collier creates exquisite artwork from vintage recycled materials in conjunction with stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. \n\n\n\nThe papers serve as both the inspiration and the media for the work\, with the narrative suggesting the forms. Through this marriage of unlikely materials old papers are transformed into something truly unique\, delicate and complex.”I work from a studio in Stafford\, and continue my self-employed career through the sale of my work\, exhibitions and commissions. I run my own gallery\, Unit Twelve\, which is open to the public. The space houses six artist’s studios\, including my own and hosts a changing program of themed\, high quality contemporary craft exhibitions\, curated by myself.

I started collecting scraps of fabric from people who were making masks in an effort to divert the textile waste from a landfill.I have realized that my greatest strength is my desire to share my knowledge with my community. It is my greatest hope that through my community service\, I can inspire people of all ages to find a way to express themselves with materials readily available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Cathy Olivar:Cathy has her own business\, Cathy Olivar Sustainable Clothing Brand. She was part of an activist group working toward a fashion future that is more sustainable and transparent and puts peoples’ lives before profit. She created her company in 2019 with the goal of providing a sustainable alternative to fast fashion.Cathy was selected along with other incredible designers to recreate some of the most iconic looks for the icon and advocate himself\, @theebillyporter\, for Billy Porter Presents: A Summer Flower Fashion Show at the Phipps Conservatory here in Pittsburgh recently.
