SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture with Jennifer Collier
DESCRIPTION:Please Register here – Registration closes one day before the event. Members free\, $5 for Guests \n\n\n\nPaper pioneer and UK artist Jennifer Collier creates exquisite sculptures from vintage recycled materials in conjunction with stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. The papers serve as both the inspiration and the media for the work\, with the narrative suggesting the forms. Through this marriage of unlikely materials old papers are transformed into something truly unique\, delicate and complex. \n\n\n\n“I work from a studio in Stafford\, and continue my self-employed career through the sale of my work\, exhibitions and commissions. I run my own gallery\, Unit Twelve\,  which is open to the public. The spaces houses 6 artist’s studios\, including my own and hosts a changing program of themed\, high quality contemporary craft exhibitions\, curated by myself. We also run a rolling program of themed art workshops\, in schools\, colleges\, and galleries; with a diverse range of community groups. I have experience working with children with behavioural difficulties and emotional wellbeing issues\, adults with learning difficulties\, but my greatest area of enterprise is with people suffering with problems around mental wellbeing.”

SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture with Teresa Baker
DESCRIPTION:Please Register here – Registration closes one day before the event. Members free\, $5 for Guests \n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 12\, 2023\, 1pm Thursday\,  Zoom Presentation/ Teresa Baker  Teresa was awarded the Joan Mitchell in 2022 Fellowship and is located in Los Angeles . Honoring both her modern aesthetic and the materials and cultural metaphors of her childhood\, Baker transforms synthetic materials into works that reference territories’ irregular shapes. The looping marks\, made with materials like yarn and string\, suggest mapping. These works are drawn from memories in the grand Northern Plains where she is from and time spent exploring\, walking\, looking\, and working. The materials\, texture\, shapes\, and color relationships are guided by the Artists’ Mandan/Hidatsa culture to explore how identity can relate to innate objects.    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I am interested in bringing landscape\, specifically that of the Northern Plains\, into an object through abstraction. Combining artificial materials together with traditional materials that my tribes—the Mandan and Hidatsa—used for utilitarian\, storytelling\, ceremonial\, and decorative means\, I reimagine how these plant and animal materials function in the context of a new object—one that seeks to explore the importance of place\, land\, and how we interact with it.”

SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture with Clarissa Callesen
DESCRIPTION:Please Register here – Registration closes one day before the event. Members free\, $5 for Guests \n\n\n\nWednesday\, September 13\,1 pm Zoom Lecture with Clarissa Callesen\, Sculptor\, installation artist\, Instructor\, and Creative coach. \n\n\n\nClarissa Callesen executes personal and community-based installations and sculptures\, constructed of knotted\, recycled discarded domestic textiles. “I work primarily with postconsumer recycled materials. Everything has been discarded from its original owner or is a by-product of organic or industrial production. I am fascinated by the history and energy of objects\, particularly found objects. I am less concerned with an object’s original purpose and more interested in the evidence of life a thing wears upon the surface. We all interact with hundreds of objects and materials every day whether they are adored treasures or complete throwaways. Our lives are interconnected with this commonplace matter.”

SUMMARY:Lecture by Fuzzy Mall
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 11\, 2023 / 11:00 am ESTRegistration is free for members\, $5 for guests.Registration opens about a month before the lecture. Please register on the Registration Form \n\nI was born in Pittsburgh\, PA and attended Kent State University in Kent\, OH. I began painting immediately upon graduation and consider myself to be self-taught. While in Ohio\, I met my future wife. We moved to a small college town in rural Missouri to pursue a teaching opportunity. I continued painting\, developing a new body of work every year\, while working full time as a postman. I considered my studio practice to be a passionate hobby.  As our lives changed\, so has my work. Painting has given way to textiles\, our home has moved from the United States to Canada\, and my hobby is becoming a profession. \n\n\n\nMy work in portraiture is interaction driven. I get to know my subject by taking candid photos and studying their unique body language. Focusing on the person in mid-motion\, I capture raised eyebrows\, crooked smiles and waving hands that we all use to communicate. This is a response to the deluge of Instagram and Facebook images currently flooding our daily lives. My intention is to reinterpret fleeting imagery by slowing down the process and hand working it\, slowly creating a permanent object from an image that we are accustomed to seeing swiped away by a finger. Ephemeral moments disappear unless made permanent in some way. My goal is to tap into the tradition of quilts and painted portraits as family heirlooms by creating contemporary portraits from these casual photographs that are snapped by cell phones\, often live in the cloud\, and usually disappear. \n\n\n\nMy latest series (Forest Bath) is an expansion on this idea.  Pieces continue to focus on personal identity and diversity\, depicting people of various ages\, races\, and genders. I capture people in action\, in personal settings\, doing things they love to do. The work is a response to our current media landscape\, which is jarring and anxiety-inducing. As an American living in Canada\, I’ve been feeling helpless watching each news cycle. This new work is a response to the number of depressing news stories coming out of my home country. I feel sad\, angry\, frustrated\, and ineffective. I know the stories of school shootings\, corporate greed\, decaying environment\, and corrupt politicians won’t stop anytime soon; and as a result\, I can only focus on a localized and momentary happiness. This series portrays people doing simple things that bring them bliss\, whether it be gardening\, biking\, yoga\, or playing with a pet. More than ever\, I need to see people enjoying life’s small moments. \n\n\n\nMy work is created from raw-edged appliqué of mostly reclaimed fabrics. This newest project breaks the square/rectangle format of traditional portraiture by eliminating the frame. Figures are larger than life-sized\, include the entire body\, and exist independent of any background\, floating on the wall or in space. Each portrait becomes more sculptural\, casts its own shadow\, and lives in a space in a new and unexpected way. Our experience becomes more intimate;  the figure invites the viewer to enter this personal moment\, and allows us to be in the same space during that captured moment. Hopefully we slow down. \n\n\n\nwww.quiltedportrait.net

SUMMARY:Lecture by Ben Cuevas
DESCRIPTION:December 5\, 2022 – 2 PM ETRegistration is free for members\, $5 for guests.Registration opens about a month before the lecture. Please register on the Registration Form \n\nBorn in Southern California in 1987\, Ben Cuevas is an artist whose work is rooted in concepts of otherness and intersectionality\, inspired by his queer\, non-binary\, HIV-positive\, and Latinx lived experience. As these multiple components inform his practice\, identity directly influences his artwork\, which is naturally interdisciplinary. Cuevas received his B.A. in mixed media\, installation\, and photography at Hampshire College\, in 2010. \n\n\n\nA central part of Cuevas’s artwork is based in textiles\, underscoring queer/feminist ideologies within the long and gendered history of women’s work with fiber-based materials. These artworks have been shown across the US with exhibitions held at The Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles\, Museum of the City of New York\, The Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York City\, and others. \n\n\n\nCuevas’s work also speaks to queer histories and the idea of the archive through his photo-based works centering images of sexual minorities from past into the present. This can be seen in his piece Ghosts of the Trucks of the Westside Highway\, and his ongoing photo series titled Reinserted. \n\n\n\nSeveral books and publications feature Cuevas’s work\, such as DUETS: Ben Cuevas & Annie Sprinkle in Conversation\, published by Visual AIDS; Queer Threads: Crafting\, Identity\, and Community\, edited by John Chaich and Todd Oldham.
