MEDIUM AS MESSAGE:

Featuring: PATI BEACHLEY, PATTY KENNEDY- ZAFRED  & MELINDA STEES

Pati Beachley
Patricia Kennedy-Zafred
Melinda Stees

Is the Medium the Message or is the Message in the Medium? How do these artists approach their materials and what do the materials bring to their messaging? Pati Beachley and Carol Milne cast fiber into “hard” materials; Pati into metals and Carol into glass. Patty Kennedy-Zafred and Melinda Stees work in the “soft” traditional mediums of quilting and knitting respectively. How do non-traditional materials and our preconceptions of them expand our notions of fiber?  How do artists using traditional fiber media push the envelope, reinvent and extend the textile medium? Why do all these pieces meet the definition of fiber art?

The Space Between

AN AFTERNOON WITH JOZEF BAJUS AND ERIKA DIAMOND

As part of the closing celebration for Contemporary Craft’s final exhibition in The Strip, Fiberart International 2019, the Fiberarts Guild partners with Contemporary Craft’s salon speaker’s series The Space Between. We have invited exceptional artists Jozef Bajus and Erika Diamond to speak about their background and approaches to the creative process. What is behind the art you see? Topics may include the concepts and themes in their work, personal connections to craft, and creativity. The speakers and audience will then engage in an informal discussion inspired by the speakers’ creative journeys and Fiberart International 2019.

AN EVENING WITH JEANNE BIERI

Jeanne Bieri

Award winning Michigan artist, Jeanne Bieri, incorporates family and collected textiles into her unique artwork. At a reflective point in her career, she began mending, piecing and combining army blankets her father brought home following his service in WWII, with parts of damaged quilts she had collected. These blankets have stories to tell: of war, family struggles, and life cycles. Jeanne uses a chain stitch technique found in Muslim clerical garments. Each stitch is a prayer, functioning as an act of healing. It is her hope that in restructuring and mending these blankets, the horrors of war today can be kept at bay.
