What is the “personal record” of the artistic voice that you will leave behind. Artists acquire skills and hone their craft with time and practice, but often are not quite sure what meaning their art has. How does your artwork speak to your viewer? In this enlightening workshop Leisa will guide participants to delve into the past and present—through Ancestral, Family, Health, Social, Artistic and Technological influences—to reveal their creative future through a transformational process called Artistic Genealogy, similar to a “family tree.” Worksheets in genealogical format will be used to help understand things that can inspire an awareness of, and reveal, the self in art. Betty Vera, who manipulates fine threads to create complex woven imagery, also makes three-dimensional artwork in which she allows the behavior of her materials to have a role in determining form. She will lead this fiber workshop with an emphasis on the freedom and spontaneity of creative play, utilizing a variety of materials. No special fiber or sculpture skills are needed to enjoy the workshop, which is suitable for participants at all levels of experience. The class will look at examples of fiber sculpture and then explore some simple strategies for constructing lightweight forms to exploit the expressive potential of line and its dynamic relationship with space.
